Son of Rodger Farrell, b. Torby Townland, Tasheenod Civil Parish, Longford and Elizabeth Orr of Longford, Ireland, who were married April 9, 1815 in Tasheenod (Tashinod) Parish, co. Longford, Ireland.

Emigrating to America at about age 19, he found work laying track for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company (PRR). Continuing with the PRR for the remainder of his working years, he ultimately attained the position of Superintendent of the Tyrone Division ( Tyrone, PA ).

John married Anna Devlin, November 16, 1845 in Johnstown, PA.

Wexford group emigrated to Allamakee County, Iowa, U.S.A. in 1850:
Famine conditions in Ireland encouraged a Wexford priest, Fr. Thomas Hore, to emigrate to America with a group of over 200 people. Fr. Hore¹s group were recorded among more than 450 Irish passengers who embarked from Liverpool, England for New Orleans, aboard the 1,500 ton ship Ticonderoga. Two Farrells were listed among the 450 Irish passengers: Thomas aged 25, and Peter aged 46.
