Tim,
Hope all is well with you, and that you are looking as forward to the Clan Rally as I am. In addition to my dad and I, we will be bringing my mom, my godmother, my sister, her husband and their two children. Don Farrell from California will also be traveling with us.
It is my hope to climb Croagh Patrick in Co. Mayo while we are in Ireland, and I was wondering if you would post an announcement to see if anyone would like to join me. I am thinking of doing this Monday, July 21 or Tuesday, July 22, weather permitting, of course.
Thanks much, and I look forward to seeing you in July!

My gg grandfather and gg grandmother came to Corning, New York, by way of Quebec, Canada between 1832 and 1836 sometime. Their names were James and Ann Farrell and they came from Carlow County. I am guessing they were married shortly before they emigrated, perhaps through the port of Cork. I know nothing more of the family’s history in Ireland. I can only assume the rest of the family on both sides (James and Ann) resided in Carlow County, but this may not have been their original home. James’s birthplace may or may not have been in Carlow. He was born around 1813 give or take a couple of years, while Ann was born in 1818. After a short time in Corning, N.Y., they settled in Middleport, Pennsylvania. It’s interesting to note that James listed his occupation as “butcher” upon his arrival in the U.S., but never worked as one as far as I know. He may have learned the trade from his father or an uncle while still in Ireland. I am also guessing that he and Ann named their children after relatives (father, uncle, brother, etc.) back in Ireland. Their names (in order of age) were: Matthew; James, jr.; Andrew; John and William. As a guess, I’d say that James’s father was probably named Matthew. If any of this rings a bell with anyone, I’d appreciate hearing from you. My email is: farcom@qwest.net. Thanks.

Hello all,
I obtained your e-mail addresses from those listed in New Jersey or Co Roscommon on the Farrell Clan website. I am writing for suggestions on how to ascertain the town/parish my ancestors came from in Ireland. Over the last few years, my cousin and I, have exhausted the U.S. records and are now looking for clues on how to tap Irish sources.
We have anecdotal evidence that our ancestors came from Co Roscommon but that is not a certainty. In order to narrow down our search we have concentrated there. The Roscommon Heritage Center was not able to help nor did we get any good information from a mass mailing to Farrells in the Eircom phone book.
Briefly what we have gleaned from all available U.S. souces is that Four brothers came over in the mid 1840s to Newark,N.J. They were Philip,Thomas,Lawrence and James O'Farrell, later shortened to Farrell. Parents Michael and Sarah were left behind in Ireland. Michael may have had another marriage to a Catherine Moore. Philip married Catherine O'Neil either here or in Ireland. Catherine's mother,Bridget O'Neil, lived with them in Newark. Lawrence married Mary Selvey in the U.S. James may have married an Anne Cullen/Culligan/Callahan in the Lissonuffy Parish before 1844. We have traced the U.S lines forward but can not locate the ancestral home. All records say 'Ireland' for country of origin. A cousin's father now deceased once said "our people are from Roscommon". We are hoping he meant the paternal Farrell line but who knows. We have some suspect parishes in Roscommon from website research and are scheduled to review Family History Records on micrifilm soon. The records from the early 1800s are limited as you probably know.
If any of these names mean anything to you,or if you have any suggestions, please let me know.
Regards,
Tom

I have some exciting news - I am currently working on a doctorate in Irish Studies a Drew University, and took a course in Commemoration and Tradition in Irish History this past summer, where I wrote a paper on commemorating the Great Hunger. I submitted this paper to the American Conference on Irish Studies and will be presenting it at the ACIS Conference at Drew University, in Madison, NJ, on November 12. I would love to have other Farrells there for this presentation. Any one interested should contact me at (908) 642-4661 or laurettafarrell@hotmail.com

Padraig Farrell and his wife are coming from Glasgow to NYC for St. Patrick's Day. My dad and I plan to meet them, and Don Farrell is thinking of coming out from California. I will find a watering hole for us to gather in that day -- could you add something to the website, letting people know we'd like to get together, and asking them to contact me?

Subject: Garrett Farrell& Anne Shanley; and Michael Farrell & Bridget Corcoran
I write seeking assistance in my quest to find out if anyone knows anything about my great-great grandparents - Garrett Farrell and his wife Anne Shanley - who apparently lived in the Bornacoola/Newtown Forbes area of the Leitrim/Longford counties. Their two sons Michael and Dominick Farrell both migrated to Australia. Michael married my great grandmother Bridget Corcoran in Ireland. Their children Dominick Joseph, Jane, Eliza/Elizabeth, Bridget and John all came to Australia too. The older Dominick married Juliet McKinery after his arrival in Australia as a convict. He later became a squatter and early explorer - after gaining a pardon.
(a) Garrett Farrell married Anne Shanley (possibly in Bornacoola, Co Leitrim, Ireland), c 1802)
Two known children:- Michael Farrell (my own great grandfather), born 1806; and his brother: Dominick Farrell [transported to Australia as a convict,he eventually became a wealthy squatter], born 1805.
(b) Michael Farrell married Bridget Corcoran, in Bornacoola, Co Leitrim, in c 1835.
Issue: Their five known children: Dominick Joseph, Jane, John, Elizabeth, and Mary were all definitely registered/baptized in the Bornacoola Catholic Church, Co. Leitrim. It seems that some parts of the Bornacoola Catholic Parish are/were situated in Co Leitrim - while other parts of it are in Co Longford.
(c) Dominick Joseph Farrell (my own grandfather) married Catherine Byrne, on 28/1/1867, at King River, Victoria, Australia.)
(d) 2nd marriage. Dominick Joseph Farrell remarried to Frances Kreckler (this is my own grandmother), in Hawthorn, Victoria, on 6/7/1889.
[Note. Dominick Joseph Farrell sired a total of 15 children - as did my own father.]
(e) Jane Farrell married Patrick Byrne at the "Hedi Station", at Edi, Victoria, on 9/2/1864.
(f) John Farrell married Nora O'Dwyer at Wangaratta, Vic, in 1874.
(g) Elizabeth/Eliza Farrell married Daniel Byrne in the Moyhu, Vic district, probably at Edi, c. 1868.
(h) 2nd marriage. Elizabeth Farrell remarried to John Douge in the Wangaratta district, c. 1874.
[Note. The three Byrnes were siblings, and John Douge was their first cousin.]
(i) Dominick Farrell (born Mohill, Co Leitrim) married Juliet MacKinery at Greta, Victoria, in 1852.
[Note. This Dominick Farrell was the son of Garrett Farrell and Anne Shanley and the brother of the Michael Farrell who married Bridget Corcoran.]
However, I am unable to find any information re Garrett, Anne; Michael and Bridget during their lives in Ireland even though I was greatly assisted in this search by the likes of Harry Farrell, Maryanne Carlton/Reynolds, Pauline Flood and Luke Baxter during my trip to Longford in 2002. Each of these people were amazingly kind and generous in every way to myself and my good wife. Good luck with your reunion. Joyce and I will soon be back to stay in Longford for a much longer visit. What a truly wonderful and lovely country Ireland is. Kind regards. Bernie Farrell.

AKRON BEACON JOURNAL JAN. 11, 1945
Sam Porter Aboard 'Worst Shot-up Fort'
B-29 Base, Saipan- "The worst shot-up Super-Fortress that ever got home" was being patched up as teh crew joked at their escaped from 80 or more Jap fighter planes over Tokyo yesterday when only the bomber's tail guns were in operating order. Hardly a part of the big plane was not either riddled or dented but the B-29 landed almost on schedule with the 11-man crew unscathed. What is more, its bombs were dropped squarely on Tokyo although it overran the target the first time and had to return in the midst of a swarm of enemy planes. The ground crew working on the palne gave up counting all holes today after arriving at the figure of 28 major dents. The bomber was piloted by First Lieut. James R. Farrell, San Francisco. Among damage was a shattered top gun blister which was hit by 20 millimeters and exploded in the face of Corp. Thomas Mockler, Newberg, N.Y. Two more cannon shells burst into the nose window, narrowly missing Bombadier Second Lieut. Francis R. Olson, East Boston, Mass. A machine gun bullet drove through a window, inches from the head of Co-Pilot Second Lieaut. Sam Porter, Jr., Kenova, W. Va. Other bullets penetrated the tail assembly around Tail Gunner Sgt. Jacob Shupak, Philadelphia, A cannon shell pierced one motor's oil line but failed to explode on contact and the engine kept running despite twom more machine gun bullets in less vital parts. Another exploseive cannon shell came through the bomb-bay near Radioman Julius Atkins, Shrevesport, La, Shell fragments badly damaged his cubby hole but did no harm. A bullet also gougeod a tire but did not inflate it. The flight engineer, Flight Officer Jack Arterburn, Beverly Hills, Cal., who flew Lancasters with the R.A.F. before the United States entered the war, said on landing: "That trip really stretched our luck." Arterburn said flak was heavier in raids he went on over Germany but he never had experienced heavier fighter interception and never heard of a luckier escape from so many hits, anyone of which might have downed the plane or killed a crewman if it had struck a fraction either way.

Below is the information I hope can be posted.
Again, thank you for your assistance and have a wonderful gathering.

For many years we have been seeking the birthplace of my great great grandmother, BRIDGET O’FARRELL, who emigrated to the US in 1872.
Bridget married in Philadelphia Pennsylvania (John HANNIGAN), raised a family there, and lived to a very old age. We believe she was born in November 1853 in CLOONFINLOUGH, County ROSCOMMON. We are not sure if that refers to the Parish or the Townland. We believe her parents were MICHAEL O’FARRELL and HONORA NEARTNEY / NEARNEY. We know that her cousin, JIMMY THOMPSON, also lived in Philadelphia, PA and that he returned to Ireland to bring his wife to the US.
Much research and several visits to Roscommon have not revealed any evidence of Bridgit in Ireland. We hope someone who recognizes a family connection will contact us so that we can finally be successful. We can be reached at faris_l@rocketmail.com

Hello,
My mother's paternal grandfather was a man named Peter Joseph Farrell. He was born in Pontypool, Wales but lived most of his life in Charleville, (County Cork), Ireland. He came the the US in 1912. I am looking for information on Mr. Farrell and his family. Any help you might provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you! I just discovered I have two men confused:
Peter Edward Farrell, (my Grandfather) was born in Pontypool and was the son of Peter Joseph Farrell. Peter Joseph was born in Charleville, Ireland and went to work in a coal mine in Wales. While there, he met and married a woman named Mary Edith Meredith. They came to the US in 1912 and 1913. Peter Joseph died in 1958 in Shrewsbury NJ. His descendants know almost nothing of his life before he emigrated and I was hoping to fill in a few blanks. I would really like to find out who his parents were as well. Again thanks for your help!

I've "rescued" an old photograph album including at least one photograph of Anna FARRELL taken on August 21, 1881 at the Leisenring Studio in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Anna appears to be 1-2 years of age at the time the photograph was taken. Another photograph though unidentified appears to be another photograph of Anna FARRELL, also taken at the Leisenring Studio in Fort Dodge, IA probably in the 1880's, Anna looks to be about 4 years old in the second photograph.
The album is full of photographs (most unidentified) from St. Paul, MN; Janesville, WI; Canandaigua, NY; Milwaukee, WI; Fort Dodge, IA; and Milton, WI; Surnames referenced within the album include:
LANNAN
HUNTLY
CHITWOOD
FOX
MASON
FEBRUARY
LANDON
WRIGHT
FOLLENSBEE
I'm hoping to locate someone from this FARRELL Family so that these wonderful old photographs/album can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me.
Thanks,

Subj: former Lawrence Farley farm honored as century farm

I thought I'd mention an interesting article on the back page of this week's Beresford Republic. The farm owned by John and Shirley Farley was honored as a century farm. The farm was originally owned by Lawrence Farley (I haven't yet checked to see which one.... I'm suspecting it is the older one). According to the article, the farm was sold in 1890 because of the drought but was later bought back by James Farley in 1901 and has been in his family ever since.
Sadly, the web site doesn't include a transcription of the article; but, I thought everyone would be interested in learning about this.

Dear Farrell Clan, This is just a note to let you know that,my Mother,Mary Sharp that fell at the reunion had nothing broken, when she fell in Eamon Farrell's Pub.She did stay 11/2 days in the hospital in Mullingar---which,slowed our sightseeing down a bit. She is now home and just goes to the Chiropractor, to relieve the pain. We still don't know why she is in pain, but, if nothing is broken, maybe just muscles pulled. Please inform Eamon and his brother of this conversion, as they were curious at the time of the outcome.
